On October 7th, 2009 Keith Olbermann dedicated the entire episode of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" to a Special Comment on the issue of Health Care Reform In the United States. The show was eloquent, thought provoking and moving to the point of heart wrenching at times but most important of all it was informative. Thankfully, no screaming, no arguing just a man, a son, a citizen reaching out to do whatever he could to make you take a breath and think a moment about what it is we are really debating here. And I for one will be forever thankful. Unfortunately, for me the issue of Health Care hits a little too close to home for me to be to open minded about it I suppose. I have noticed that I mostly stay quiet on this issue...at least publicly... it wasn't conscious... I didn't even realize it until I sat down to write this post... some things are just like that I suppose. I am one of those people being debated about in the halls of Washington and for that matter so is most of my family... though we have been blessed by great humor, great love and a wealth of fun experiences one thing I/we have not been blessed with is great health....that's just how it goes sometimes. For most of my life I have waded through the hell that is the American Health Care System, both during flush time and not... and I am always painfully aware of just how lucky I have been to be here in the U.S while dealing with all of it. In fact I think I even used that argument on myself as a sort of coping mechanism... but as the years have gone on and the system has only gotten worse it has become harder and harder to admit to myself that really is not the case... that is not to say that there are not far worse places to be from while battling poor health of one sort or another... but the truth is that is just not good enough. We should, must and can do better...not just here, everywhere really...but especially here as we are also the richest nation on Earth at the moment. The whole issue is sickening really (no pun intended of course)... iThis is an issue that goes to the core of who we are and who we hope to be, it should go beyond the mere politics of winning, beyond knee-jerk reactions & name-calling, beyond Right & Left...Health Care for All is fundamental core humanity, beyond Right & Left... providing Health Care to all who need it is as basic as it gets... in fact is is not an "issue" at all, but a simple matter of right & wrong the rest is just the details.
